All of the molds shown above were sampled from the return air vent of various
homes and cultured in a petri-dish to be identified by a Certified Mycologist. When various mold species are
present in the indoor environment, dead (non-viable) spores can typically be found in the ductwork as well
as other areas throughout the home. Dead mold spores can easily spread and remain throughout the home.
Black Mold and the dreaded Stachybotrys
Most molds will appear black once they die off but it is the dreaded Stachybotrys chartarum (also known by its
synonym Stachybotrys atra) which is actually considered “black mold”. The primary reason for this is that
Stachybotrys will appear extremely dark black and shiny when compared to other molds growing on the same or similar
surface. Here are some Black Mold Pictures for your reference.
Skin Disorders Relating to Mold Exposure
Persons which have a severe hypersensitivity or allergy towards certain mold species can experience acute skin
eruptions shortly after exposures. Certain toxic molds can cause a severe skin rash which may last until the mold
is properly removed from the indoor environment. Here are some Skin Rash
Pictures showing skin disorders that can occur from mold exposure.
Mold Growth on Hard Surfaces
Dead mold spores can spread through the home according to various environmental conditions such as humidity, air
movement, activity and ventilation systems. Here are some Mold Growth
Pictures of active colonies growing on hard surfaces found in homes. Once the human body breathes in a dead
mold spore, it cannot make the distinction between dead or alive mold organism. In fact, it is more likely that
someone would inhale larger amounts of dead spores since they can become aerosolized during air movement. A dead or
alive pathogenic mold such as Stachybotrys, Aspergillus or others could actually grow in the nasal, throat or lung
tissues if inhaled in sufficient quantities causing chronic or serious illness.
